Teen Leaders – Summer 2025
This summer, ten Boston-area teens joined Navigation Games through the Cambridge Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program. Over six weeks, they contributed 20 hours a week to help bring orienteering to the community. From leading games to mapping courses, they brought energy, creativity, and teamwork to every program.

HABEN
Haben is heading into 11th grade and is interested in engineering. His favorite Navigation Games event was visiting Spectacle Island. He sees cardio and map reading as two of the biggest benefits of orienteering. This summer, he worked with kids, did project work, tested courses, and developed his map skills.

MUSTAFA
Mustafa is a rising senior interested in a career in AI. He especially enjoyed the Spectacle Island trip, with its boat ride and ocean views. Over the summer, he engaged with people in parks and on the island, enjoying conversations with strangers and improving his social skills. He believes learning orienteering sharpens mapping skills, which are useful in everyday life, and he values the fitness benefits as well.

AHMAD
Ahmad will be a freshman this fall at CRLS. He’s looking forward to an upcoming trip to Orlando, Florida. Reflecting on the summer, he says, “We taught people of all ages how to orienteer and use a map correctly.”

CRISTIANO
Cristiano is a rising 11th grader with an interest in Computer Science. His favorite Navigation Games program was orienteering training in Boojum Rock because “I got to experience actual orienteering in the woods.” He enjoyed learning to use the compass and found it especially useful for getting oriented after an off-trail segment.

MOHAMAD
Mohamad is a rising freshman who enjoys fishing and playing soccer. His favorite Navigation Games program was Carson Beach. He feels the biggest benefit of orienteering for kids is getting them running and active. He also appreciated gaining work experience teaching people of all ages.

NUFAIL
Nufail will be a high school junior this fall. He liked the trips to Carson Beach and Moakley Park and appreciated being outside his comfort zone in new environments. He says orienteering is good for children because it teaches “relying on your teammates and your directional-based skills and map to travel from point A to B.” As part of his work, he also created an orienteering anthem.

AMÉLIE
Amélie will be a high school senior this fall. She enjoyed the Spectacle Island trips because “we got to work with so many different people, like kids with different camps. We also had adults do it too.” She believes the biggest benefit of orienteering for children is “learning how to go from being lost to finding the end.” Her summer work included teaching kids how to read maps, organizing events, making flyers and posters, and program design.

ANDY & ROSE
Andy and Rose’s work this summer included teaching kids how to read maps, organizing events, making flyers and posters, and contributing to program design.
We are proud of our Teen Leaders for their dedication and enthusiasm. Their contributions helped make this summer’s orienteering programs a success.
